Cypher pulls in the crowds at The Big Draw

Tullis Russell’s Cypher paper proved its versatility at the national launch of The Big Draw 2004 campaign in London’s Trafalgar Square on Sunday (26th September). The Scottish based papermaker donated a quantity of large reels and sheets of its Cypher paper for the multitude of drawing activities which took place at the all day event.

The reels of paper were unwound through a giant picture frame where renowned artists, cartoonists and illustrators delighted the crowds with their colourful drawings all based on the theme – What’s for Dinner? Each artist was invited to draw their favourite dish or dinner guest, creating the world’s longest dinner party! More than thirty artists took part including Quentin Blake, Steven Appleby, Peter Blake and Antonio Carluccio. Over 35,000 people attended making it the UK’s biggest free art event.

Also attending the event, in conjunction with the BBC’s Rolf on Art series, were well-known faces such as Linda Barker, Bill Oddie, Jane Seymour and Anika Rice – to name but a few.

The founders of The Big Draw believe that drawing aids communication and invention as well as giving people pleasure, and encourages everyone to take part in this year’s campaign, which offers over 1250 drawing events across the country throughout October. Derek Guthrie, Tullis Russell’s marketing services manager, comments: “We were delighted we were able to help make The Big Draw 2004 such a success. Seeing the crowds enjoying the art being created in front of them and thousands of people drawing on our paper was fantastic.”

Sue Grayson Ford, director of The Campaign for Drawing, comments: “Over 35,000 people participated in the world’s biggest art party and helped to launch the October Big Draw which offers events in over 1000 locations across the UK. The atmosphere was electric and the paper donated by Tullis Russell was in huge demand by countless families sketching the scene and the Square’s iconic architecture.”
